Orphaned pet rabbits

Postby Greggorio » Thu Jul 29, 2010 10:15 pm

my rabbit gave birth this morning and died during it. 6 of the 9 died as well. 3 are alive and though im following what ive read online im feeling pretty crap about it as everywhere said their chances are unbelievably slim. So depressing. I'm trying anyway but it's just very upsetting to think theyre probably going to die. Also even though I've put them in a better position to feed them they still seem to choke on the milk... it's uber shit

That really is bad luck - I wouldn't know where to start with newborn rabbits.

that makes two of us. Thank god for the internet. there is some conflicting information but ho hum. I'm also meant to mix into their milk a certain type of poo that the adults do that they re-eat but they normally eat it straight away so I havent found any yet. Very stressful...

I've got them on a mixture of goats milk, kitten milk, probiotic and those funny poos that rabbits re-eat.

I've also got the hang of making them go to the loo.

Loads of sites say you need to feed 2m;l every 12 hrs and loads say feed them a little every 4 hours. which is best?

they are new zealand giants? crossed with giant papillons? i think thats what they're called. the dad is the papillon.

How can I tell if they look skinny? They seem to have had excess skin since they were born

You sound as though you're doing an excellent job.

I handreared a litter of chipmunks once, sounds much the same as what you're doing, apart from the refeeding poos part

I totally empathise with your feeding problems - it was really hard not to cause little bubbles in the noses of the 'munks when feeding them, and it took ages to get just a tiny amount in.

Best of luck, and keep up the excellent work you're already doing 8)
