Darn....lost a chicken :(

Just came home to find the youngest of the girls, my POL silver laced Pekin sat by the back door with her head/neck twisted over making funny noises. Took her straight to the vet where she had a tempterature above 42.5 (thats as high as his thermometer went) and I was told the twisting of the neck was nuerological/nervous. She's had to be euthanased and we've had Defra on the phone Now have to wait overnight to see if the rest of the girls are okay. If they are we're all good, bar loosing poor old Petal and if they're showing any signs of illness, it'll be Petals carcass off to Defra and possibly the rest of the girls off to the giant coop in the sky.

The only problem is the vet couldnt confirm what is was that had caused it other than an acute infection of some sort...

Thanks for the kind words, the rest of the flock appear happy this morning. I've called Defra and they're happy that with such a quick and acute infection (based on the nerval reaction and rate of dicline) if it was a major nasty they would be showing symptoms by now, thus they're happy its not notifiable. Phew, but still they dont know what it is which is a shame as it would be good to know. We do as much as we can for the girls, but if we've missed something and caused it then it'd be good to know what it was. On the flip side we do live near a lake with a large number of migrating birds, so I guess the possibilies are wide ranging?

Your vet was right to be concerned as torticollis & sudden death are signs of Newcastle Disease which is notifiable. Torticollis can also manifest in Mareks.

So sorry , but glad that Defra think it is a one off. I have just lost 2, 1 CLB and 1 Faverolle, to, what is thought to be, Mareks. I am keeping everything crossed that it hasn't spread.
