Mini encyclopedia chicken breeds and care - Frances Bassom

Postby M00R3Y » 07 Aug 2009, 21:21

Just wanted to let you all know about this book.
A brilliant buy, well worth the money.
Really informative, and great for anyone who wants a good bit of info on pretty much all the main breeds of poultry.
It covers light breeds, heavy breeds, true bantam breeds and game breeds.
includes a extensive section on all aspects of chicken keeping, raising, and breeding.
A great little read, and highly recommended.
A book no poultry keeper should be without.

Cheers,
Tom.

Well I did look with more interest at the lavender dutch lad and did wonder, but as I don't have any pictures of him, I didnt have anything to compare the pic in the book too. All though I think there might be some of his offspring featured. (Please don't tell me now that the lavender was the lad you had off me, OH still hasn't forgiven for giving him away

I'm assuming some of the dutch and lakenvelders are yours?

Yep some of the Dutch are mine, the broody with the big chicks, the white hen with scaly leg  , the lavender being used to demonstrate handling. The gold Appenzellers throughout are mine, the Buff and Red Sussex on the breed page IIRC. Funnily very few of the Lakenvelders are mine, and I don't think any of my Vorwerks were old enough at the time. There is a buff Orp and a bluebelle in their somewhere too...

Lots of the coops and close ups of bits of coops are mine

It is actually a really well written book, although I will say the photos of the breeds that I breed weren't the best examples.

The thing I really like about it, is its the first chicken book I've come across that tells you about showing, and it mentions the dread red mite.

It should be on every newbie to chicken keeping books list.
