What do you do?

Post by MamaOwl » 03 Jan 2015, 14:57

So apart from keeping poultry or a small holding what else do you do?

I'm a body piercer! I stab people for money and make them look blingy lol www.yzzy.co.uk is my business website... I work with a tattooist and our shop is called House of Pain

I've had a few other jobs in my lifetime but this one is my fave.... so far!

So.. what do you do when you aren't mucking out coops?

very boring - worked in advertising where one of my jobs was to water the marijuana plants and book bunny girls for parties, then I worked in the oil and gas industry for 25 years, trying extremely hard not to send my bosses off on hijacked airlines (only happened once), avoiding having a desk thrown at me (another boss) and then suddenly being in charge of huge budgets, to my own and the company's probable horror. So in the day I wore a suit, walked the walk and talked the talk, etc., but at weekends I was a secret motorcyclist with a tattoo and a love of heavy metal and punk music. Then ten years ago had a "what the heck am I doing with the rest of my life" moment, rented out my house to a friend, got married and moved to France in a very short space of time and now I spend my days living as a country gal, sing in an all-girl rock band (we're all dreadful), organise some events for expats for animal charities and travel a lot. None of this was really planned but I say yes to pretty much anything and life is hunky dory so far ...
my chooks: Sage&Onion, Roger the randy cockerel, Squawkbox, Bonnie 'N' Clyde, Pancakes, Custard, Omelette & EggNog. Plus four garden cats and another half dozen feral ones that I feed. And a nursery of pipistrelle bats in the verandah roof ..

aren't we a diverse bunch? No links to my girl group (un)fortunately! We change the lyrics to popular songs to suit the circumstances - I changed Kylie's 'can't get your out of my head' song lyrics into a middle-aged couple who've just read 50 Shades of Grey! Not sure whether the faces our audiences pull are laughing or trying to bleach their ears ...

Trained for classical ballet, performed in plays in loony bins, worked for John Lewis, made mediaeval dresses, costumes for the Sealed Knot & wedding dresses, ran a National Trust shop, worked for the Wales Tourist board, worked on archaeological digs, run a smallholding, raised six children, spent 12 years on the local community council but otherwise a pretty hum-drum life. Keep up with archaeology digging, but at least it's in the bottom of the garden (and several archaeologists later we still don't know what it all is).
Guinea fowl & a lot of surplus poultry equipment.

There is a long list of jobs not least The Man from the Pru in the 80's, and moving on swiftly to Mental Health Nurse in the mid 90's and then Psychotherapist from late 90's and Manager of a Psychiatric Nursing Home in North Devon before retiring to France in 2006 (as opposed to the Drawing room!)

Since 2013 I've been spending 2 mornings a week at Resto du Coeur distributing food to those in need.

I am also having a whale of a time selling Neal's Yard Organic beauty products either online from my replicated website or at workshop, spa afternoons and/or coffee mornings.

Only had two employers in a 19 year work career. I'm lagging behind

Currently an IT Technical Specialist, mainly doing our own in-house software, as well as *nix, PostgreSQL, Oracle. Hate Windows and everything it's responsible for.

Prior to this (last year actually) I was a 3rd line support specialist with around 12 years doing that job (I don't like change much).

Prior to that, I was a spotty little oik working in an accounts office surrounded by middle-aged women with more axes to grind than the Vikings. Not a healthy environment for an 18-23 year old raver to try and sleep off hangovers mid week.

In between about 5 years of that myself and the missus also ran our own pubs. As they always say, never meet your heroes. My ideal life as a youngster was to be a landlord, the reality of it was very much different. Getting up at 5am every morning, cleaning the pub, stocking up, then going to work for 8 hours, then another 4 or 5 hours of bar work or socialising (as you do), generally meant 2 or 3 hours sleep a day, constant hangover, and made sod all money for our troubles. Thank you, British economy, government and stupid smoking ban!

Always been a bit animal mad. Had 100's of pets (literally) over the last 20 years, with some very odd and random offerings.

Met my now wifey back in 2002, got 3 lovely kids who drive me bonkers, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Have dreams of retiring to a beach side pub/diner in a hot sunny destination, when I win the lotto/save up/get gifted a huge inheritance/etc.
Giving power to politicians is like giving whiskey and car keys to a teenage boy - P. J. O'Rourke (thanks Jessie)

It's amazing that people can believe everything is predestined but they still look both ways when crossing the road - Stephen Hawking

1 Wife, 3 children, 1 Staffie Bitch (RIP Marley), 1 Chi-Chi, 1 Tuxedo Cat, 1 part Maine Coon cat, male bearded dragon, Horsefield Tortoise, 2 White Silkies, 1 Frizzle Pekin, 1 CLB, 1 Appenzeller Spitzhauben Cockerel, 1 blue laced Wyandotte, 3 Appenzeller x Wynadotte pullets, 1 Call drake, 3 khaki Campbell ducks, 4 (2 male 2 female?) Aylesbury x Campbells, a breeding colony of Dubia cockroaches.

And a lot of Ibuprofen.

Left school at 11 years old although the authorities did not agree, time served painter and decorator until the work ran out at the end of the 70,s. Kitchen porter in a large mental hospital then became a chef ( more money less physical work) got bored so joined the Royal Navy Submarine service so spent 22 years either at sea or drunk and doing what sailors do ( That is whittling pieces of wood and singing sea shanties just in case you with dirty minds were thinking something different ) Retired at 42 worked for a short time in a yoghurt factory and as a part time milkman, then retired properly at 46 now I keep chickens and turkeys and I am a member of a western shooting club I have my own guns. I am now a free man if you think you can be free with ( 11 bloody Grandchildren) ahhhhhhhhhhhh babysitting again this Saturday
