Should be no problem at all. Chickens can eat all different types of grain.

Re: Chicken with swollen eye

I'd be inclined to try a different vet - maybe research a poultry vet in your area or try this: http://www.justanswer.co.uk/sip/veterinary?r=ppc|ga|18|Pets%20-%20Vets%20-%20Search%20-%20CobJHG|Pets%20-%20VetsOnline%20-%20ModBroad&JPKW=vet%20on%20line&JPDC=S&JPST=&JPAD=68533871434&JPMT=p&JPNW=g&JPRC=...

Re: Chicken with swollen eye

If it's not affected by antibiotics it may well be a virus. Not a lot you can do and the outlook is not good I'm afraid. Just keep him warm and stress free if possible.

So sorry CP - know how it feels. Had mine taken from inside their house too. Old English Game bantams killed and half eaten :crybaby: :crybaby:

Your link needs attention - we can choose between trainers and toys amongst other things - not what you mean I'm sure!

Re: Strange Behaviour

I guess you have sussed the culprit - almost certainly a rat, they are so clever! Maybe check inside the house now every night and remove the pellet stockpile - and put poison down in lengths of drainpipe outside the hen run.

Re: Poultry shield ratio please?

Poultry Shield is supplied in concentrate 1 litre or 5 litre sizes and diluted at
the rate of 1 part concentrate to 5 parts clean water (i.e. add 200ml poultry
shield to litre of water).

This taken from Flyte so Fancy's website.

Re: Huge egg!

I think it's fairly normal for many breeds. The occasional whopper turns up as the chicken matures.

Mixed or mongrel - with a bit of Cream Legbar by the looks of it. You might get coloured eggs.

Experiment with weeds! Mine developed a passion for sow thistle (http://www.eattheweeds.com/sonchus-sow- ... igs-eye-2/) and dandelions. Try also groundsel, clover, chickweed (of course!) and just ordinary grass (chop grass small so you don't get sour crop).

Re: Egg turning during incubation

I don't think it matters too much - though personally I would set it to 90 minutes. Most important is to stop the turning at day 18.

Re: Chicken coop cleaner?

Surfaces just have to be dry before the chucks go back. Lasts ages! I couldn't find a sign of mites for the rest of the year after I used it but others have quoted 6 months or so.

Re: Chicken coop cleaner?

Poultry Shield is a disinfectant and won't address a mite problem. Haven't used Smite. Interesting that creosote cured your mites - it had virtually no effect (and I used the real stuff, not the ersatz useless stuff) when I used it. The tried and trusted mite killer is Ficam W, supposed to be for pr...
