Re: Mystery illness or gapeworm?

Thanks Henwife, that makes perfect sense, I would have advised her not to put other chicks in with the hatched ones, but she didn't tell me she'd done it till afterwards. The chicks she bought were almost certainly commercially hatched and thus could easily have been carriers of all sorts of things....

Mystery illness or gapeworm?

Evening all, I have a bit of a conundrum. I lent my incubator to someone and gave them some hatching eggs, of which twelve hatched. When the chicks were about 3 weeks old she bought some other chicks of the same age and put them in with the hatchlings with no problem. When they were about 3 months o...

Re: Check out my coop... Advice welcomed :)

Heh, it won't exist for very long if you let them have free use of it. They're worse than goats for desert-creation.

Re: Keeping guinea fowl?

If you wanted to keep them commercially You would have to keep them in an enclosure with a roof of some sort, netting would do. I would make some sort of open bus shelterlike structure with high perches in it and a plank half way up for them to take off to and from. Although if they survive in the o...

Re: Keeping guinea fowl?

I've got some as well, they are incredibly thick, but do learn eventually. I'm down to 2 cocks and 2 hens, they like to be in pairs, and if there are more cocks than hens they'll fight and the losers will leave until they're down to equal numbers. You can have more hens than cocks, though. You would...

Re: How much feed (pellets) to give to free-range layers?

Mine are free range all year round, but in the summer I notice that they only want wheat, wheras in the winter they're interested in mash as well. They also eat a lot less feed in general in summer. The only exceptions are those who have problems with thin egg shells - they always want more mash. So...

Re: bird attacks??!! or something more??

Our cats catch blackbirds, but they never eat them, they eat everything else including lizards and snakes, but blackbirds are never touched.

Re: Growing chicks

Yes, they love it. It's a bit dark now inside our house with all the leaves on the trees, and they couldn't get over the sunshine outside- I transferred them in a heatwave, and after the first night they didn't need their electric hen either. Great to see them all sunbathing with their wings up - is ...

Re: Gapeworm: HOW TO TREAT IF NOT EATING.

Thanks Lindsay, I hadn't seen your other thread about gapeworm, and to be fair this is the first time I've had one with gapeworm myself. He's doing fine now, but I must say he had more than a double dose, I would say he was having nearly a gram a day and it didn't do him any harm. I read somewhere t...

It's almost certainly a double-yolker, she's still learning to lay, so this is like 2 eggs stuck together.

Re: Worms or something else? I need to do something quickly

A definite improvement this morning, he was down the vine at the crack of dawn looking for food, instead of staying in bed until 10am. Still can't crow, though. This is the 4th day of treating with Flubenvet slurry by mouth (beak), so I expect that he'll need a week at least to recover completely, j...

Well, he's still alive, he still can't crow, but he can get up the vine to go to bed, so not at death's door yet.

Re: CCTV - Visit from fox!

So do you have to go through all the footage to find the interesting bits, or does it filter out the bits where nothing is happening? And does it work on batteries? Presumably so if it's wireless. Sounds like just what I need, 3 of them!
