Re: New year new breeds

get something you like first of all - if you don't like them then you'll not fuss them like the others you've got -I suspect that these are pets and you're not a serious breeder if that doesn't sound patronising... As to what sorts, well the worlds your oyster. Welsummers are nice, lay OK - dark ter...

Re: Feathers feathers every where. ..

well I found a mass of feathers as well today ... but one of pullets had gone :( she wasn't particularly good show wise but she was a chocolate 'dotte and was destined to become a broody hen next year... ah well I shall have to get some others now ...

Re: advice wanted from octagon 20 users

I've got two and I run them dry then when it comes to day 18 I transfer the eggs to a hovabator that I use as a hatcher (easier to clean as fluff doesnt get in the fan etc) works well for me too although I do still prefer broodies :D

Re: Araucanas

they're like people, they all have their little quirks so will be different. It could be sown to how they have been reared so far , the particular line all sorts of things. So long as they are good strong examples of the breed then I wouldn't worry too much unless they are obviously deformed in some...

Re: plastic leg rings ?

it depends on the birds really, some have bigger legs than others ... if you've got any Indian Game x CLB they will need bigger leg rings than say a welsummer... If you go to the PCGB site they have a list of ring sizes against breed (Cockerels are larger than the pullets) and I've got the clic type...

Re: Cream legbar standard??

OMG ! I actually agree. Midnightuk, there can be, I have found a bit of 'snobbery' for want of a better word about CLBs in particular and although its nice to have show quality, excellent layers we might not get them easily ,so I would'nt let any of this spoil your enjoyment of your birds. It is a ...

Re: Cream legbar standard??

They look to have lacing on the breast as well ...I can't find any photo's of growers about the same age as yours to compare them with, but here's a link to one of Jill Ree's hens and you can see the hackles are much paler than on yours ( it should be cream - dilute gold) https://www.facebook.com/ph...

Re: Silkie X Wyandotte

depends what colours you put in

If you use a white silkie x Columbian dotte they should look like Gold tops I guess, but if you use a barred dotte hen then any chick that is barred will be a cockerel (unless you use a barred silkie).

Re: Countryfile - Adam's farm - incubator

Depends on the model LP. Some have a rack for the trays to go in to hatch so you can keep running the inccy for incubating at the same time, or you can get a separate hatcher.

Re: Confused

Well ... the easiest to obtain are probably (in order of ease) * Cream Legbars (blue egg layers) but beware there are some out there that aren't CLB's even though they lay blue eggs, * Welbars (barred Welsummers) available in bantams ( yours truly :naughty ) & LF lay a brown egg and are easier to br...

Re: Confused

Practical Poultry June 2103 in the Q&A section it says regarding sexing Sussex chicks "... The Pullets will feather up much faster than the males and will also have broader looking feathers. On the male chicks , the back (between the wings), is slower to feather often giving an impression of baldnes...

Re: Daring to venture back.....

another tip I was given some time ago for all those hard to get at places is WD40 as it come with a handy nozzle extension so you can trea the ends of perches. and where I live we have a lot of bracken growing and I used to cut this and dry it (in the greenhouse) and use this in the nest boxes as th...
