Re: New chickens with one old?

They are very securely locked away dusk to dawn. The coop I made has an outer layer (roof, walls and base) or corrugated steel roof sheeting. A fox with a hacksaw couldn't gain access!

Re: New chickens with one old?

What type and height of fencing is required to keep foxes out? This is the first fox attack we've had since keeping chickens two and a half years ago. We let them free range over our entire property which is around 1.5 acre. Fencing off the entire area would be too cost prohibitive, so I'm wondering...

New chickens with one old?

A fox finally managed to gain access and killed two of my two year olds, leaving only one hen remaining. This was around a week ago and the fox has been shot by a neighbouring farmer. The danger of fox attack appears to have gone (for the time being anyway). Would there be any problems getting anoth...

Re: hen crowing ?

It's not that uncommon. I had a hen who use to cock-a-doodle-doo to tell everyone that she had just layed an egg. One of mine does that occasionally. I've only four hens but they each have their own vocal preferences. One in particular chuckles and chirps all day long, especially when she see me - ...

Re: Strange lump on chicken. What is it?

Your post just creased me up laughing. I'm really embarrassed too. My poor chicken. That "lump" just didn't look like it belonged there, certainly not part of the chicken. I'm just glad we didn't pull too hard. When I read (above) that it was the preening gland I felt physically sick that I'd been a...

Thank you! That is very reassuring. I'll leave it alone then.

Strange lump on chicken. What is it?

One of my hens has a strange lump on her back near her tail. At first I thought it was a tick but it was much too large for that, certainly much larger than the ticks I've seen on dogs. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera handy at the time and it was difficult enough to catch the hen. It is a litt...

Re: Got an egg eater! What can I do?

How is everything going WileECoyte? Not good. Not found ANY eggs for the last couple of days. I'm in the process of gradually moving the chicken coop towards the vegetable garden (a few feet every day) so the chickens don't get too confused where to roost. Once the coop is inside the vegetable gard...

Re: Got an egg eater! What can I do?

I put "egg eater" into search top right and it came up with 103 posts, so they might be worth checking out. I also noted that there is a recent, ongoing post in this same forum about egg eating, so another one to check out. Thanks. Ironically I noticed the existing thread AFTER I'd posted this one....

Got an egg eater! What can I do?

My four hens roam a very large area free range. They lead a happy and carefree life. I haven't been able to find all the eggs for the last few weeks, they've become quite expert at finding new hiding places to lay. However, I've found the odd remnants of broken egg shells here and there. Yesterday I...

Re: Poorly hen? Any advice please?

I've just been out to check on her and she's gone into the coop to roost - which looks like a promising sign. A little early today as it is fairly sunny this evening. I'll pick her up and examine her tomorrow when she (hopefully) emerges from the coop.

Poorly hen? Any advice please?

I think one of my hens is poorly. I have four hybrids, just over a year old. They have all been in perfect health since I got them a year ago. They roam free range over a large area. This afternoon I noticed one standing on her own and could tell straight away something wasn't right from her static ...

Re: not as many eggs

I've had four eggs as usual yesterday and today from my four hybrids despite the torrential rain over the last couple of days. Maybe it depends on how much shelter they've got available and whether food is also available without them going foraging in the rain? Though saying that, mine looked like d...

Re: Weird screeching hens

one of mine always screeches after she has laid, to let us know. 8.20am every morning so far for 20 minutes! One of mine does that. Incredibly loud. Only just associated the noise with having just laid an egg. Still not worked out most of the other chicken sounds but several seem to be food related...

Re: not as many eggs

Depending on how big your run is... have they found somewhere new to lay their eggs? That caught me out a couple of weeks ago. Egg production was down... then a few days later I found a new nest well hidden under some ferns containing all the missing eggs.
