The Poultry Keeper Mail Hosting

The Poultry Keeper Forums are now offering their members mail hosting. Below are details about the protection we help you with, but basically mail is processed in a way that should reduce the amount of spam you get quite substantially! We have two packages available:

Option 1: If you do not already have a domain, we can register you a .co.uk, .me.uk or .org.uk domain name for two years for 6 GBP. The mail package is then 10 GBP a year. For the first year you will be billed in total 16 GBP, the second year 10 GBP. Your mail can be forwarded to your existing mail account at your ISP, or for more flexible and powerful usage you can collect it using a mail program (such as Thunderbird or Outlook Express) or read and write your emails using our Webmail system. Your mail storage will be 75MB. You will also have 100MB of web space for a small website.

Order before Saturday 22nd December and get 1GB of space for your mail and website in total.

We will handle all the domain registration process for you, and set up the basics ready for you to start using. It usually takes 24-48 hours for a domain to become fully registered and operational. If you want to check if a domain already exists, go to Nominet's website to check. If it says it doesn't exist, you can snap it up with our help.

Option 2: If you already have a domain, you can either point the domain at our servers for mail processing, or move the whole DNS to it. This has the same mail features as above, and costs 10 GBP a year. This is for more advanced users who already have a domain name.

Order before Saturday 22nd December and get 1GB of space for your mail and website in total.

The domains operated on this server use several technologies to either prevent us receiving spam, or to help you identify when a domain we host has been "borrowed" by a spammer. These technologies, when used wisely, can help to prevent yours and my mailboxes from being filled with useless emails.

Incoming Mail

GreyListing

For receiving emails, we operate greylisting. This is a clever technology to help me with the amount of spam sent to me. When you send me a mail for the first time, my mail server will tell you I'm too busy to receive your mail, and to try again in a couple of minutes. Normal mail servers do try again. Spammers typically give up, and move onto the next address. The worst that happens usually is your mail to one of our domains is delayed by a few minutes.

Spamhaus Zen List

This is a list of compromised machines and networks. If a network is on the list, we won't accept the mail till the network is clean.

Virus Scanning

All mails are scanned with anti-virus software to ensure it is free of viruses. Virus infected mail is junked. We scan mails with F-Prot.

Spamassassin

The incoming mails are scanned with Spamassassin to check if they are likely to be spam. They are scored, and sorted accordingly. No mail is ever automatically deleted.

Outgoing Mail

SPF

We publish SPF records for our domains to help you ensure that the email you've received is from us. Most mail servers and mail clients have addins available to let them check SPF records. If it doesn't match our SPF record, then the chances are high that it aint from us!

We're doing our bit to try and ensure our domains are reputable. Are you?
